Mechthilde

Mechthilde
(c. 1210–c. 1280)
   Mystic and Saint.
   Mechthilde was born into an aristocratic family in Saxony. In c. 1230 she joined an austere convent in Magdeburg. She is remembered for her mystical visions which she recorded in Das Fliessende Licht der Gottheit. During the last few years of her life, she lived in a Cistercian convent in Helfta. The original version of her work has been lost, but it survived in Latin and High German translations. Her revelations greatly influenced later German mystics and they included a vision of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
